Today, we’re going to talk about some simple words that help you connect your ideas when you’re speaking or writing in English. These words are: and, but, or, so, and because.

Let’s see how you can use these words:

  • And helps you add more information. Like when you say:
    “I went out of my hotel and walked to the Wall.”
    “It was a warm and pretty night.”
  • But is used when you want to show a difference or contrast between ideas. Like this:
    “I like China, but I’m not a big fan of the food.”
    “The hotel was nice but too pricey.”
  • Or offers choices or alternatives. For example:
    “Would you prefer to visit the old town or hit the beach?”
    “Please, don’t yell or scream.”
  • So shows a result or what happened because of something. Such as:
    “The Wall is very old, so parts of it have fallen apart.”
    “They stayed up all night working, so they were sleepy the next day.”
  • Because explains why something happened. Like:
    “People in China built the Wall because they wanted to protect themselves from enemies.”
